Saravanan Sivakumar popularly known as Surya (born on 23 July 1975), is an Indian actor in the Tamil film industry. He is the son of Tamil actor Sivakumar and is married to Jyothika, a popular Tamil actress. He is well-known for trying out off-beat roles in different films. Suriya is also the brand ambassador for large brands like Himani Navratna Oil, Emami Fair & Handsome, Pepsi, TVS and Sunfeast Biscuits.

Early life

Surya studied at PSBB and St. Bede's, Chennai. He completed his commerce graduation from Loyola College, Chennai. He was employed in a garment manufacturing company in Ambattur, Chennai. A notable point is Vijay, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Karthik Raja (both Ilayaraaja's sons), Jeevan, Vishnuvardhan and Surya were all class mates during their studies.[citation needed]Surya then ventured into the cinefield to become one of the top reigning stars of the Tamil film industry.

Personal life
His father is the Tamil actor Sivakumar. He is the eldest son in the family with one younger brother actor Karthi and younger sister Brindha. He married actress Jyothika on September 11, 2006.
Career

His debut film, Nerrukku Ner (1997) with Vijay was a big hit but all his succeeding films did not do well. His first reasonable success was in the movie Poovellam Kettuppar (1999). His next movie with Vijay, Friends was another big hit. But he did not get any big breaks and his career seemed to be stalled until director Bala approached him for a role in his next venture titled Nandha. This was one of Surya's best films. The film grossed Rs.50 lakhs at the box office.

Surya’s next venture was with Vikraman in the movie Unnai Ninathu and the movie was able to record good collections. This was followed by Mounam Pesiyadhe which also did decently well. Surya’s second blockbuster was Kaaka Kaaka, a movie about the life of a police officer. The film grossed almost Rs.100 million at the box office. Also Pithamagan alongside Vikram was a big hit, Surya was appreciated for being a very different character.
In the movie Perazhagan, Surya acted in two roles, one as a boxer and the other as a handicapped but a confident phone booth keeper. His role as the handicapped was praised by critics, and he received a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance. His role in Aayitha Ezhuthu as a student leader was also favoured by the critics. His movie Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkalam was dropped due to financial problems.

In 2005, Surya delivered more successful films in the form of Aaru and Ghajini - afterwards he set up a production company called Studio Green which distributed the movie in the Chennai district. Ghajini was one of the most sensational hits of 2005, with Surya playing a short term memory loss patient, for which he even tonsured his head. The film was his third blockbuster and grossed over Rs.200 million at the box office. By then, trade began comparing him with long established actor , Ajith.
Surya's recent release is N. Krishna's Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. He acted opposite his real-life partner Jyothika in the film. The movie released on September 8 2006. The movie was an average grosser.

Up next, Surya has signed up to an untitled A. R. Murugadoss film and a film with Gautham Menon, Vaaranam Aayiram directed by Gautham Menon.He is doing another movie called VEL opposite ASIN since their onscreen chemistry did work out well in his blockbuster GAJINI, fans are eager to see VEL hit the theatres soon. He also dubbed Abhishek Bachchan's role in the Tamil version of Guru. Surya is also brand ambassador for various products.

Background

Sumanth studied in a Hyderabad public school until he was 17 years old, completing +2. After that, he came to U.S. for six years. During those six years, having joined an engineering course at University of Michigan. He later realized it did not match his career ambitions and made a shift to art and directing. Sumanth started his career in Tollywood in 1999 with Ram Gopal Varma's Prema Katha. The film became a disaster. In 2004, he acted in another hit film, Gowri. The year 2005 didn't prove to be lucky for Sumanth as he starred in flop films like Dhana 51 and Mahanandi. Suman's full name is Mangalore Suman Talwar.Suman was born on 28th of August 1959 at Chennai.
His mother Late Smt. Kesari Chander was the Principal of the prestigious Ethiraj College for women in Chennai.
His father Sri. Susheel Chander worked for I.O.C. Chennai.
He is now residing at Hyderabad, with his Wife Smt. Sirisha (grand-daughter of well known Play-Wright Sri.D.V.Narasa Raju), his eight-year-old daughter Akilaja Prathyusha, his mother-in-law Smt.KavitaRaju and Sri.D.V.Narasaraju.
His mother tongue is Tullu (Mangalore, Karnataka).Suman did his kinder-garten at Church Park Convent, Chennai.
He completed his schooling at The Besant Theosophical High School, Chennai.

How often do we see people who are outsiders to the film industry, enter it, endeavor through the hardships and secure a unique place for themselves. Srikanth, often referred as the hero with chocolate looks, has come far from the time he entered tollywood with his debut film Peoples Encounter. Born on 23rd March of 1968 in Vijayawada, Srikanth was born and brought up in Gangavathi in Karnataka and studied there till his tenth standard. Later Srikanth graduated from B.Com and being very interested in acting and movies, joined Madhu Film Institute to get experience in acting.
But as we all know, acting experience alone is not enough to bag great roles in the movie industry. Through lot of dedication and hardwork, Srikanth achieved his first break with the movie, People's Encounter produced by Usha kiran movies under the direction of Mohan Gandhi. After that, he was able to bag villain roles in movies like Sitaratnam Gari Abbayi. The break from villain roles came through when Thammareddy Bharadwaja offered him a role as a hero in One By Two. The movie became a success and paved the way for Srikanth to secure more movie offers. He continued to act in all movies that came in his way for the next one year. Sobhanbabu, one of the senior Telugu film artistes, quietly disappeared from the Telugu film industry. Though some of his contemporaries are still making their presence in films, Sobhanbabu voluntarily opted to stay away from the film industry. Not only in films, he is keeping himself off from any functions or festivals related to the film industry like audio releases, film releases or Nandi award kind of prestigious dos.

Sobhanbabu's real name is Uppu Shobana Chalapathy Rao. His date of birth is January 14, 1937. He is the son of Uppu Suryanarayana Rao. He has three sisters Dhanaranga, Jhansi and Nirmala, besides a brother Sambasiva Rao.

He had completed his schooling in Kuntamukkula Mylavaram. He pursued his Intermediate in Vijayawada and finished his degree in Vijayawada. Later, he joined law course in Madras, but discontinued it.

He got married to Kanta Kumari on May 15, 1958. He has a son Karuna Seshu and three daughters Mrudula, Prashanti and Nivedita.

Though he was in the glamour field, he did not allow either his sons, daughters, brothers or sisters into the film industry.

He made his debut into films through Daivabalam directed by Vasanthkumar Reddy, but the first film that hit the screen is Bhakta Sabari and his first crush is with L Vijayalakshmi. Chitrapu Narayana Murthy is his first director, while BD Naidu was the first producer. It is Pendyala Nageswara Rao who gave music for his first ever film. His film Manushulu Maarali was run for 25 weeks which was a recording during those days. By the time Sobhanbabu entered, it was black and white era. His first colour film is Kannavari Kalalu. For the first time he went abroad for a film shooting for Ramudu-Parasuramudu. He made a dual role in Potti Pleader for the first time.

During those days Sobhanbabu is the only stylish star. Even if he wears a T-shirt or if he wears a suit, it is perfect fit for him. It is Sobhanbabu who used to wear goggles in song sequences and it is worth watching on screen. He had received Filmfare Awards for four times, Nandi awards for five times, AP Cine Goers Award for eight times of which he bagged the award consecutively for six years from 1970 to 1975. Likewise he had bagged Madras Film Fans award for nine times. Vamsi Berkely Award, AP Film Fans Award, Andhra Patrika Award, Film World Award were only a few to mention. He bagged the Central Govt award for the best classical film hero for Bangaru Panjaram in 1970. Filmalaya, Cine World, Cine Express, Kalasagar, and Kalasravanthi were few more awards that came in his way.

Sobhanbabu had paired up with Sarada for several films and they were said to be a hit pair of all times. It is really a unique combination. Sobhanbabu is known for his glamour and performance for about 30 years in the filmdom and Sarada is known more for her outstanding, performance-oriented roles, especially for sober roles.

He was popularly called as "Andhra Andagadu" meaning, "Most handsome person in Andhra Pradesh". He was honored several Nandi Awards by the state of Andhra Pradesh Government. He probably earned maximum number of awards among any Telugu hero for his diverse roles spanning over 30 years. He was the most popular ladies hero for over 20 years. In fact, he earned so much ladies popularity that even to this day any good ladies family entertainer is referred to as "Shoban Babu type movie" by the telugu movie lovers. He was honored "Natabooshana" title and it became his last name in movie credits.

Though several senior artistes had lost their earnings either by producing films or in some other way, Sobhanbabu had a planned career. He invested all his earnings in real estate business and is leading a peaceful life with a complete happy family with sons, daughters, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law and grandchildren. He acted in films that suits his age all the times. At the fag end of his career, he chose some character artiste roles and finally took retirement from films for a happy and fruitful life. He celebrated his 70th birthday on January 14, 2007.

He acted in Tamil films as a junior artist in projects like Monisha En Monalisa, Shabash Babu, Rajadi Rajavan, and Thiruvalla in minor roles. His debut in movies as a hero came in the form of Kaadhal Azhavitazhallai, a Tamil language movie also debuting Charmi, a popular Telugu actress. The film was highly hyped but the film flopped at the box-office and it was followed by Dhum and Kuthu with Rakshitha and Ramya respectively. These films also flopped at the box-office and criticism was heaped on Silambarasan for his self-acclaimed title of Little Superstar and his deliberate copying of actions which were normally used by the Tamil superstar, Rajinikanth.
Alai with Trisha Krishnan followed, it became his first film to run over 50 days at a cinema but once again he faced controversy due to some scenes between Trisha Krishnan and himself. His next film, Kovil with Sonia Agarwal was an average grosser at the box-office. Silambarasan then took a year's break to concentrate on Manmadhan project, he wrote the screenplay for. The film starred Jyothika, Mandira Bedi and Yana Gupta opposite him and the film became a runaway triumph at the box-office breaking many records especially in Madurai and it ran for 275 days in Kollywood. The film earned rave reviews and changed many peoples' minds about Silambarasan's career. His next film, Thotti Jaya also was a hit, in which he had paired with Gopika. For Thotti Jaya he sported a black beard in the role of an orphaned gangster who finds love.
In 2006, Saravana was released. After the success of Manmadhan, he paired up with Jyothika to act in the film directed by balachndar. The film was a hit despite being released with Paramasivan and Aadhi, it eventually ran for 100 days. Silambarasan decided to turn director in Vallavan, which has become the most anticipated film of the year of 2006. It was released on Diwali 2006 and starred him opposite Nayantara, Reema Sen and Sandhya.
Personal life

Silambarasan was born to a famous Kollywood couple, T. Rajendar and Usha. His parents were both actors. T.Rajendar was also a famous director. He has a younger brother, Kuralarasan who appears as a child actor in several films. His sister, Illakya, is a college student at Loyola College, where he had also completed his education.

At Ashram school, Silambarasan studied with the Tamil actor, Rajinikanth's daughter, Aishwarya.

As of 2007, he broke relationship with actor Nayantara and gossiped to leak the private photos in which he was lip-kissing her as a vengeance.

Biography:

He was born in Tamil Nadu and was educated all over India (his first two schools were elite boarding schools) and then attended the prestigious Kirori Mal College where he graduated with honours in commerce. It was here where his passion for acting began as he was part of the theatre group at college called The Players but it would seem life had other plans for him at this point.He was going to outdo himself academically and go on to do his MBA (from the SP Jain Institute of Management) where he would be once again successful and awarded a CNBC Manager of the Year.
But life finally took a turn for the even better (for the girls who swoon over him) when his brother and cinematographer PC Sreeram (two people who have inspired, mentored and supported him relentlessly) who helped him land the prestigious assignment - a chance to assist the legendary Mani Ratnam in the film Kannathil Muthamittal.

He was quoted to have said "I met Mani Ratnam for an interview and landed my first job in cinema. I am proud to be associated with a film as special as Kannathil Muthamittal. I saw and learnt the science of filmmaking from very close quarters". He also went onto work as a cinematographer but under a pseudonym and it is very hard to find those films (lets hope his popularity sky rockets and Indian journalists acquire enough conviction to actually research and investigate his work!).

It was during this assignment that writer Sujatha saw him and recommended him for the casting of the films Boys.

Having established himself in the art of film-making, his patron, Mani Ratnam approached him to do a Tamil film, Kannathil Muthamittal, though this was not his debut film as an actor - it was a Tamil film called Boys. A film about a group of *shock* boys who venture into the music industry as a band. It's opening was phenomenal - the biggest in 2003, however as critics panned the dialogues (so-called explicit references), the film dwindled in success. However musically it was an astounding success and once dubbed in Telugu and released in Andra Pradesh, the film became a hit and recovered all of its losses.

After this success, Siddh relocated to Hyderabad (from Chennai) to focus on Telugu films, where he worked for the amazing Prabhu Deva in a film called 'Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana', in 2005 which to date is Siddh's biggest hit! In 2005, Siddh also ventured into the writing forum as well as singing forum as he wrote the screenplay for his Telugu film Chukkallo Chandrudu directed by Siva Kumar and sang as a playback singer.

This was also the year that Siddh left his mark on the Hindi film industry - he was part of a phenomenal ensemble cast in the critically acclaimed and box office smash Rang De Basanti. The film was sent as an Oscar's bid as well. This was followed by the successful Bommarillu and Aata in Telugu. Finally the world was awakening to Siddh. He has 2 Hindi films and 1 telugu film in the making - an achievement for any newcomer into Bollywood but an even greater achievement for someone who is from the South. It is a rare feat for someone from those industries as Bollywood as very tightly bound in loyalties and cliques. Another testimony to the powerhouse that is Siddh.

Political career

Sarath Kumar Nadar joined DMK in the year 1996. DMK fielded him in Tirunelveli Loksabha Constituency during 1998 parliamentary elections and he lost by small margin. In 2002,DMK made him as Rajyasabha member . He left DMK before 2006 Assembly elections owing to differences with Tamilnadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi's family members. He joined AIADMK along with his wife Radhika and campaigned vigorously for that party. His wife Radhika Sarathkumarwas dismissed from AIADMK for anti party activities in October 2006. He also quit from AIADMK in November 2006 quoting his workload in Cine industry as a reason. He might soon start a new party on his own. RaviTeja joined Krishnavamsi as an assistant director for Ninne Pelladatha. He also did a petty role in the film. Though he got a good name for Sindhuram, his career didnot profit much from that. He did some secondary roles in Premaku Velayara and Padutha Thiyaga.

During the intitial phase of his career he got petty roles but emerged as very popular comedy actor in the decade of eighties and nineties starting from Ladies Tailor (1985). Biography:

Rajini, the real mantra of Tamil Nadu. There are fan associations across Tamil Nadu dedicated to him. Many more than for any other Tamil star, past or present. Rajinikanth, the carpenter-turned-coolie-turned-conductor-turned Super Star says: “I couldn’t have asked God for more.”

A bit of a recluse, Rajni may be. But everyone who’s had the privelege of a darshan with the thalaivar has come away with a spring in his step and a warm glow in the heart. Warm, friendly and affable, he’s the sort who deserves all the superstardom he’s earned. Such men, indeed, are rare...
It’s been 25 years, believe it or not, since the Periya Thalaivar (big boss) made his debut with an inconsequential role in a Tamil film. From villain and antihero to blockbuster supernova, the gifted actor has made the most of every outing. And he’s deserved every bit of the success. SCREEN analyses why...

It's a wide angle shot. A man is seen opening a gate, dressed in rags and smoking a beedi. A terminally ill disease writ large on his face. Precisely on that frame appears the Sanskrit term shruthi bedham, coupled with an off screen voice, an undoubtedly inauspicious start to any debutante’s first screen appearance, especially in the maiden frame.

The film was Apoorva Raagangal (1975). The film itself was thick in controversy, and nobody took notice of the young newcomer, who was on screen barely for fifteen minutes, muttered a few apologetic words to the wronged woman and ultimately died an unsung, unheroic death.

No one in the audience, even in his wildest imagination, would have thought this nondescript man, who had won the least attention in the film would ever win over millions of hearts in Tamil Nadu. Or ride the state like a colossus. Or even that his sway over the masses would be so intense that he could rewrite the fate of Tamil Nadu politics, exactly two decades after the release of his first film.

K Balachander, the director who has an uncanny knack of creating stars, first met Rajnikant at the film institute, where he was a student. Balachander glanced at the dark young man and crisply asked him to meet him in his office the next day. When Rajnikant walked into his office gingerly, Balachander informed him he was going to act in his next film. Overwhelmed by the sudden offer from a ‘big’ director, Rajnikant just could not believe his ears. It’s a feeling Rajni still recounts whenever in the mood of reminiscence.
Later, Balachander confided in his close friend and associate Ananthu, “Watch out! There is a fire in the young man’s eyes. One day he will take Tamil Nadu by storm.” How true the prediction turned out!

Producers went all out to capitalise on this new “wonder” called Rajnikant, and a string of films projecting him as an anti-hero, with all his stylish mannerisms in full swing, were released in quick succession. Gayathri had him shooting blue films of his wife without her knowledge, Bhairavi, Shankar Salim Simon and the like. Rajni had, by now, become an indisputable star in his own right, a force to reckon with.

Though Rajnikant persistently refers to K Balachander as his “guru”, it was director SP Muthuraman who actually revamped Rajni’s image entirely. Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri, as a villain in the first half and a refined man in the second, accepting a woman with a child ditched by her lover. The success of Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri prompted SPM to make a mushy melodrama with Rajni as a hero sacrificing everything for his siblings, a role ideally tailormade for Sivaji Ganesan! That film was Arulirunthu Arupathu Varai, in which Rajni’s mannerisms were totally missing and he even appeared as an old man in the last few frames. Even while the film was in the making, Rajni had misgivings about whether the audience would accept him in tear jerkers of this kind. But the film got made and its box-office success made Rajni popular among women audiences, too. These two films were a turning point in Rajni’s career — he changed from an actor who merely enthralled the audiences, to one who also made them weep. The acceptance of Rajni sans his mannerisms proved he’d at last become an actor from a star. Around this time came Mullum Malarum, directed by J Mahendran, which established Rajni as a hero with a slight tinge of the negative.
Rajnikant’s entry may have been humble, in an insignificant role but the success he achieved in a very short span was unimaginable. A popular Tamil magazine brought out a special supplement at a time when his still on the make, and, he presto, the magazine’s sales doubled with that issue alone.

Such mass adulation, the thunderous rain of applause when Rajni delivered his lines, all put together, made him a phenomenon. It was at this point that Rajni realised the onus had been thrust on him. The fate of producers hinged on him alone. This sudden exposure to the glare of the media and the popularity and money he never imagined would be his, created a lot of stress in his mind. At that crucial time in his career when his market price had just begun to zoom, he decided to opt out of films completely, sending shock waves to his fans. Balachander, Kamalhaasan and his other well-wishers somehow, coaxed him into staying on.
The second phase of his life started with K Balaji’s Billa, a superhit disproving the canard spread by detractors that Rajnikant was “finished”. He was accepted as a full-fledged hero. Billa was followed by a row of hits like Pokkiri Raja, Thanikkattu Raja, Naan Mahaan Alla and the all-important Moondru Mugham, in which Rajni essayed a triple role. Even two decades after its release, the last continues to be a box-office draw and Rajni’s fans can never tire of the thalaivar’s verbal clash with villain Senthamarai. K Balachander’s first home production, Nettrikkam proved to be yet another milestone in Rajni’s career.

An analysis of Rajni’s career graph shows a remarkable absence of fits and starts. It has been a slow and steady rise to the very top. As Rajni sings in a hit song from Badshah, a man’s life may be divided into eight divisions. Rajni’s own career may be divided into three segments. The first as a villain, the second as a hero with negative traits, and the third and present phase, as the reigning czar of Tamil filmdom. With Rajni’s films fetching crores and his market price skyrocketing, the costs of production of his films became unmanageable. And Rajni has since had to stick to a one film per year formula, sometimes, he could do a film once in two years.
The new trend where his films’ collections exceed normal regional film expectations started off with Badshah, followed by Annamalai, Arunachalam, Ejaman, Muthu and Padayappa. It’s now an accepted fact that only a Rajnikant film can break records set by his own films.

As an actor, Rajnikant’s greatest asset, apart from his style is his sense of humour and comic timing. Like Amitabh Bachchan is popular for his drunken soliloquies, Rajnikant is famous for his comic encounters with snakes, repeated umpteen times.

In the early 80s, Rajnikant made a foray into Bollywood with Andhaa Kanoon, a superhit. But Rajnikant could not concentrate on Hindi films because he was already safely ensconced down South. He still made a few films in Hindi, to mention specially Chaalbaaz which had Sridevi in a dual role. Rajni also enjoys a special kind of popularity in Telugu films and his Peddarayudu (remake of Tamil hit Nattammai) seems to have broken all previous records. The Telugu version of Padayappa has been a money-spinner, too. Rajnikant became a trendsetter recently with his Muthu and its songs becoming a rage in Japan and now, Padayappa running to packed houses in the UK and USA.
Basically a religious person, Rajnikant has always owned up his faith. “I was brought up by the Ramakrishna Mission and it’s from there that I have inherited this religious frame of mind,” he keeps saying. Even his films have him openly sharing his faith. In Arunachalam he mouths that famous line, “God decides and Arunachalam executes it.” His public meetings are always spiced with humour and embellished with anecdotes from mythology.

Married to Lata, an English literature graduate, hailing from an elite Iyengar family in 1980, Rajni has two daughters who are carefully kept away from the limelight. Lata herself a versatile singer, now runs a school called The Ashram. The couple indulges in a lot of charity, the latest being converting his Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam into a charitable trust to help the poor and needy.

Ego and starry airs are unknown to Rajnikant. During breaks he hardly ever rushes to his air-conditioned makeup room. Instead, he prefers to sleep on the sets, even without a pillow, merely covering his eyes with a wet cloth. He never comes to functions with a retinue behind him and even prefers to drive his own car.

Rajnikant’s phenomenal success and his sway over the masses make people speculate whether he will follow the footsteps of the late MGR and enter politics. Though there has been a lot of pressure on him to enter politics by the likes of actor turned journalist, Cho Ramaswamy (“Rajnikant is the best choice for chief ministership because he has a basic integrity and simplicity, a quality which is very rare these days”) Rajnikant has persistently maintained a diplomatic silence, except for the fact that he openly supported the ruling DMK in the last assembly elections and discreetly in the recent Lok Sabha elections. When pressed, Rajnikant answers in his own inimitable style, “Yesterday I was a conductor, today I’m a star, tomorrow what I’ll be only He knows!”

Film Career

Powered by a strong desire to become an actor, Rajinikanth went to Madras, the tinsel town of Tamil Cinema. He was helped by a friend to join the Madras Film institute and completed his acting course in 1974.

Rajinikanth got his first break in movies when he played a small role in kannada movie "katha sangama" of late director Puttanna kanagal. Later he in tamil he played as cancer-patient in the movie Apoorva Raagangal (1975). This film was directed by K. Balachandar, whom Rajinikanth considers his mentor, and who named him Rajnikanth. This movie also starred Kamal Hassan in the lead role, who became one of his closest friends. The movie that fetched Rajinikanth a wide recognition was Moondru Mudichu (1976), in which he played the role of a cruel womanizer. He followed it up with movies like 16 Vayadhinile , Gayathri, which cast him in villainous and anti-hero roles.Director S. P. Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri, in which Rajinikanth played a villain in the first half and a refined man in the second. Then Rajinikanth slowly moved on to playing positive and character roles in movies like Mullum malarum, Arilirundhu arubathu varai. Films Billa, Pokkiri raja and the like saw him playing stylish action roles while Murattu kalai, Payum puli and Moondru mugam took him to dizzy heights. He was also good at comedy as can be seen in Thillu mullu (1981). But the most unique among his movies was Sri Raghavendra (1985) "his 100th film"which was a biographical portrait of Hindu saint Raghavendra Swami.Some of the best dramatic movies of Mr.Rajinikanth would be pudhu kavithai and aarulirundhu arubadhuvarai.In pudhukavithai,he depicts a person who has lost his lady love and roams as a drunkard in the roads of bangalore,and their reunion is picturised in the best way possible.The sweet romance feel is given by none other than the Maestro illayaraja.

The late 1980s saw him doing more and more action oriented family entertrainers like Velaikkaran, Manidhan, Dharmathin thalaivan, etc., and it was never looking back for Rajinikanth. His movies made in the 1990s became mass blockbusters. Some of these include Annamalai, Baasha, Padayappa. These movies also had a tinge of politics.

His another blockbuster Chandramuki (April 2005) which is a remake of the malayalam blockbuster movie "Manichitrathazhu" starring Superstar Mohanlal (also remade in Kannada as "Aaptamithra"). Chandramuki has broken all the box office records of all movies ever made in any Indian film industry. It was made after his previous movie Baba (2002) was not so successful.
Rajinikanth is popular for his flamboyant dialogue delivery and characteristic mannerisms. While contemporary actor Kamal Hassan selects performance oriented roles, Rajinikanth's movies has been mass entertainers. His movies invariably has a 'good win over evil' theme with entertaining action sequences, catchy songs and good natured humour, which makes his films liked by people of all age groups and all walks of life.

Rajinikanth has acted in over 170 films including movies in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and Bengali. He has also acted in one Hollywood movie (Blood stone in 1988). He has acted along with notable actors like Sivaji Ganesan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Hassan, Mammooty and Sridevi. He has worked with famous directors like Mani Ratnam and Bharatiraja.

In his 32 year long career, Rajini acted in more than 100 movies. In 2007, he acted in his 100th Tamil movie- Sivaji: The Boss which did a tremendous a business all around the world.
Unfortunately, Rajinikanth could not see much success in Hindi movies. It is not only Rajini but almost all the famous South Indian film stars who could not gain much popularity in the Hindi film industry. Still, Rajinikanth is the unspoken king of Tamil cinema and commends huge fan following which even would make Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan very jealous. Not only in terms of fan following, but Rajini is also the highest paid actor in the entire Indian film industry. He gets Rs. 150million per film plus a share of the film’s revenue. For Sivaji: The Boss he took Rs. 160million.

Prabhu Deva Sundaram, better known just as Prabhu Deva, was born on 3 April 1973 in Karnataka though his mother tongue is Tamil. He is a choreographer, actor and film director in India. He is popularly called "India's Michael Jackson" for his fast dance movements. His first movie as a dance director was Vetri Vizha (Tamil). He has since choreographed over 100 movies. He is a two-time winner of the National Award for Best Choreographer for the film Minsara Kanavu in Tamil and Lakshya in Hindi.

Before starting as a full time actor, he did some song sequences in films. His first movie as a hero was in Indhu with actress Roja. Prabhu Deva went onto win a Filmfare Best Actor Award South.Being the son of a dance master (Sundaram), dancing became his passion. Prabhu Deva was first noticed when he made a brief appearance in a song in Gentleman. From choreography he went on to establish himself as an actor. He became a star in Kollywood with his impressive dance steps. Prabhu Deva's success can be attributed more to his dancing than anything else. He has a large following in the Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film industry.

Prabhu Deva gained some popularity in the western world when some of his videos were featured on YouTube, notably Kalluri Vaanil, following the path of his compatriot Daler Mehndi. Prabhas Raju Uppalapati (born October 23, 1979), popularly known as Prabhas is a Tollywood actor and the nephew of Tollywood star and politician Krishnam Raju Uppalapati.

Career

Prabhas's early movies, Eeshwar and Raghavendra, did not fare very well at the box office but he gained stardom with M.S. Raju's film, Varsham, opposite Trisha Krishnan, in 2004. After the success of Varsham, Adavi Ramudu and Chakram did not live up to the expectations of Prabhas's fans. However in September 2005, he made a comeback with the phenomenal blockbuster, Chatrapati, opposite actress Shriya Saran. Biography

Pawan Kalyan, the hero who could get huge following with just 6 movies to his credit and able to make his 7th movie grossing more than 20 crores, is a simple, humble and away-from-publicity guy. Media is always keen on him as they know nothing about him.

Pawan Kalyan was well resourced when he stepped into films. His big brother Megastar Chiranjeevi's ardent fan following getting ready to embrace the launch of another member from the Mega family, his second brother Nagababu - a producer, his brother-in-law Allu Aravind - an ace producer. What else would one need?

Pawan Kalyan was first married to Nandini, whom he divorced on 13 August 2008. Pawan Kalyan has been married to Renu Desai (On 28 January 2009) , a co-star, who is currently owning a design store called Designs. The happy couple are blessed with one son, Akira. Despite his latest release and directorial debut, the hugely expensive Johnny, faring disastrously at the box office, actor Pawan Kalyan's place among the top five stars in the Telugu film industry remains secure, at least for now.

Kalyan, younger brother of Megarstar Chiranjeevi, created a record in the Telugu film industry by selling Johnny for a record-breaking Rs 210 million and releasing it in more than 300 theatres. Viewers made a beeline for the first few shows, but the tragic tale of a young man running from pillar to post to save his cancer-stricken wife failed to click with the audiences.

His fans felt that if Kalyan had made a youthful entertainer -- the sort he's known for -- the distributors would have laughed all the way to the bank. A few industry bigwigs praised his directorial ability, but others questioned the choice of subject for his debut venture.
Kalyan's disappointed fans, however, are already looking forward to his next film, produced by his other brother Nagababu. Directed by Veerasankar, it stars Meera Jasmine as his leading lady. He is also working on a film directed by Karunakaran for ace producer Aswini Dutt. It remains to be seen which film reaches the theatres first.

Shy by nature, Kalyan dreamt of becoming a film technician. It was Chiranjeevi's wife Surekha who convinced him to become an actor. Chiranjeevi's brother-in-law Allu Aravind launched Kalyan with great fanfare in Akada Abbai Ikkada Ammayi, but the movie failed to make an impact at the box office.
Film Career

Though Pawan Kalyan was launched in a big way with Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi in 1996, all one could see in him was Chiranjeevi's brother. Continued the same trend for another two movies - Gokulamlo Sita and Suswagatham. Pawan Kalyan's discipline and dedication comes from the martial arts that he has been practising. To clarify some of the critics comments about his martial arts skills, Pawan Kalyan demonstrated a show amidst a huge audience at Ravindra Barathi. He was awarded the title "Pawan", symbolising Lord Hanuman for his energy. Hence Kalyan was rechristined as Pawan Kalyan.

In 1998, Tholi Prema released. It initially started out low profile but the treatement and the storyline along with melodious and balanced music by Deva took the movie to great heights and so did the image of Pawan Kalyan. Tholi Prema is a milestone in Pawan Kalyan's career. It is the movie which made the audience recognize the talent him.

Thammudu, another blockbuster followed, is a remake of Jo Jeetha Wohi Sikkandar with a difference that Pawan Kalyan is a kickbocxer.

Kalyan teamed up with a new director, Puri Jagannath, for his next film, Badri (1999). His superstardom was evident when the movie traded for an astronomical sum, leaving the Telugu industry amazed and his critics carping. But Kalyan silenced them when the love story opened well and went on to make a huge profit.

Badri's action sequences were well appreciated by the audiences and added a new dimension to Kalyan's loverboy image. "I pick those down-to-earth characters to identify myself with a wider section of the youth," said the PowerStar. He consciously began to increase the gap between his releases.

Producer A M Ratnam signed him for a remake of his Tamil hit Khushi. The movie exploited Kalyan's loverboy-cum-action hero image. The ego clashes between the protagonists (Kalyan and Boomika) were widely appreciated and the film went on to become the biggest hit of his career, grossing Rs 27 crore (approximately US $5.72 million).

Pawan Kalyan is, as reported by media by then, involves himself in other aspects of the film too. Though few criticize that, it's his responsibility and commitment to the project that makes him take care of everything. And ofcourse, it worked each and every time. Kushi, released in 2001, created records. Kushi, his 7th movie, went on to get a gross of 20 crores.

By this time, he had stopped interacting with the local press and even skipped the press meets organised to cover his films. He only granted interviews to a few English magazines, but later discontinued this practice as well. He shot his debut venture in a low-profile manner and shrouded it in secrecy. The media were warned against using stills of Johnny without permission.

Just before the film's release, Kalyan was in the news when he accused the Deccan Chronicle Group of publications of making baseless allegations against him and his brother, Chiranjeevi. He, Nagababu and Allu Aravind staged a dharna before its office in Secunderabad, with fans organising a rasta roko (road blockade) in his support.

Pawan made his first official directorial debut with Johnny, for which he traveled to Japan to get trained in martial art Aikido. Renu Desai and himself cast as lead actors, the film did not do well at the box-office. Gudumba Shankar (2004), for which Pawan contributed screenplay miserably failed to reach the expectations of the audience. Balu (2005) by Vyjayanthi Films didn't do too well. His next movie Bangaram was average. Annavaram (2007) was good grosser.

Jalsa (2008), is the most widely released south Indian picture ever (approximately 1000 theaters worldwide). The movie hit the screens with high expectations and created record of collecting more than 42 crores with in 50 days of its release another big hit in Pawan's Career. Currently he is acting in a film named Komaram Puli directed by S.J Suryah, cinematography by twice IIFA award winner Binod Pradan and music of this film is given by the Oscar award winner A.R.Rehman.

Pawan Kalyan is involved in the State politics of Andhra Pradesh. He is campaigning for the Praja Rajyam Party, which is led by his own brother Chiranjeevi. He was appointed as the president of Yuva Rajyam, the youth wing of Praja Rajyam.

Media have every reason to misinterpret him. They write a lot about him. He was completely down after Johnny. What he thought of Johnny and what got translated on screen was very different. He compensated the distributors' loss. He have always shared the loss and no one talks about it. Nevertheless, he is a very content person and he never felt that he should use media to justify his actions. He always thinks that movies are the only source of media for him to interact with the audience and his fans. The fact that he has not celebrated even a single 'Success Meet' or a function after his movie reaches a landmark shows his modesty and simplicity. His sheer disinterest in media is the reason for the bad propagation about him in the media. Also Pawan did not receive any award for his movies so far as he is not media friendly. The fact that he did not receive the Best Actor award for Khushi in 2001, the year in which Telugu film industry was in crisis shows the non-cooperation of media to him.
Social Work
Pawan Kalyan has started an organization called Common Man Protection Force(CMPF) in October 2007. He has contributed 1 crore INR towards the corpus fund, CMPF aims to solve the social problems, help the neglected sections of the society, in India. Akkineni Nagarjuna Born August 29, 1959 in Chennai, India), often known as Nagarjuna, is a popular Telugu Cinema actor and a successful producer. He is the son of veteran actor, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, who was an actor in the 60's and 70's.Nagarjuna was born to Telugu cinema star Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Annapurna Akkineni. Nagarjuna did his schooling at Hyderabad Public School and later went to Little Flower Junior College to do his intermediate. Muhammed Kutty, better known by his screen name Mammootty, is a very popular Indian film actor. He has acted in more than three hundred films, most of them in Malayalam cinema. Mammootty is the recipient of three National film awards for Best Actor, six State awards and six Filmfare awards in the "best actor" category. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1998. Mammootty is also the current Chairman of Malayalam Communications, which runs some of the popular Malayalam TV channels.

Biography

Mammootty was born on September 7, 1953 at Vaikom in Kottayam district of Kerala, India. He has two younger brothers, Ibrahim and Zakariah; and three sisters, Ameena, Sauda and Shafina. He received his education from Maharaja's College, Ernakulam and then studied law at Ernakulam Government Law College. It was during his days at Maharajah's that he got his first role in Anubhavangal Paalichakal (1971). He also practised as a lawyer for some time in Manjeri, Kerala. He married Sulfath in 1981 and has a daughter and a son.

Acting career

His first film as an actor, Devalokam, was not released in theatres. Famous writer and auteur M. T. Vasudevan Nair and Film director K. G. George played an important part in blooming his career.His first film as the hero was played in the movie "Thrishna" directed by the veteran director I.V.Sasi,who had also directed his come back film "Aavanaazhi".His "New Delhi" also played great amount of importance in his life as an actor. His talent was noticed in films like Vilkanundu Swapnangal directed by M T Vasudevan Nair and films like Mela and Yavanika, by K.G George.

One thing that sets Mammootty apart from his contemporaries is the fact that from the beginning itself, he has been able to treat both art-house cinema and commercial potboilers with ease. He made his mark during the early period of his career itself by enacting roles in films of stalwarts like M. T. Vasudevan Nair, K.G. George, Padmarajan, P.N. Menon, and Bharathan. Later on his talent was utilised by internationally renowned directors like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, T. V. Chandran, and Pavithran. He was a regular in movies of Harikumar, Mohan, et al. The movies by M.T. Vasudevan Nair and Padmarajan, arguably among the best of Malayalam writer-directors, widened Mammootty's acting horizon.It was also noticed that the M.T-I.V.Sasi combo had always worked wonders in Mammooty's films.

Two of M.T. Vasudevan's films with autobiographical elements were acted by Mammootty - Aksharangal (I.V. Sasi) and Sukrutham (Harikumar).

The film New Delhi directed by Joshy was a turning point in his career. The film was based on the novel, "The Almighty" by Irving Wallace. His portrayal of a victimized journalist, who systematically took revenge on politicians who beguiled him, was noticed and well accepted well by the masses. By then he had achieved superstardom.

His Oru CBI Diary Kurippu was also a major landmark in the history of Malayalam Cinema. It brought to fore a new concept of an investigative thriller, fresh presentation of politicians and above all a refreshing idea of the hero.The film went on to create box-office history in Kerala.

Following the success of the first CBI film three more murder mysteries sequels were produced with the same cast of characters: Jagratha (1989), Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004) and Nerariyan C.B.I (2005, all directed by K Madhu, with Mammootty as Sethurama Iyer, an intelligent but unassuming CBI officer.

Mammootty touched the pinnacle of his career in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (roughly translated as 'A northern heroic folklore'), again an M. T. Vasudevan Nair creation. His depiction of a Chekavan of distinguished valour but vilified by circumstances won him the top honours of the country, National Award for best acting. His histrionics matched the literary genius of M. T. in each and every minute detail.

It was his acting talent, coupled with his willingness to go to any extent to rationally portray the roles, that enabled him to act in both offbeat and commercial movies.

Mammootty became almost a regular face in Adoor Gopalakrishnan's films. He starred in three of his movies, Anantharam('Thenceforth'), Mathilukal('Walls') and Vidheyan ('The Servile'). The easiness with which he illustrated on screen the protagonist in Mathilukkal(based on Mathilukal, a novel by the Malayalam literary genius Vaikom Muhammad Basheer) was also instrumental in getting him his first National Award for Best Actor. His performance in two commercially off-beat movies, Ponthan Mada by TV Chandran, and Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Vidheyan won him the award for the second time. His performance in "Ambedkar", an English movie by Jabbar Patel, won him the National award for a third time. He is also a recipient of Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards in India.

Mammootty had briefly crossed the boundaries of Malayalam cinema and acted in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. Though he proved only a moderate success in Tamil after Mani Ratnam's Thalapathi, his fan following is on par with other Tamil film stars. His notable successes in Tamil include Anandam by Linguswamy and Kandukondain Kandukondain by Rajiv Menon. However, his maiden Hindi film, Dhartiputra went unnoticed. Mammootty, nonetheless made his presence felt on the national level with the biographical film on Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Directed by Jabbar Patel.

Though he has been criticised as unable to portray comic roles, his latest movies Rajamanikyam,Balram Vs Tharadas, Thommanum Makkalum,Thuruppugulan and Maayavi gave a fitting reply to critics. Mammootty, though a hugely popular star, is an exception in Indian films where dancing skills have to be a necessary part of an actor's repertoire. But the emotion and the depth that he lends to his characters makes him a well revered actor and makes up for his shortcomings.

Trivia

* Mammootty plays hero in real life. Mamootty and Dubai-based businessman M.A. Yusuf Ali met with the officials of the Dubai Internet City (DIC) and finally - the proposed Smart City project at Kochi is now within striking distance of the investment-starved state. This project could potentially bring over 90,000 jobs to Kerala.
* Mammootty met with an accident on 19.02.07 on the sets of Amal Neerad's Big B that could have even cost his life. A dummy bomb used during the shoot exploded sending an iron rod flying towards him. He managed to dodge away in time. The shoot was stopped immediately.
* Mammootty is the only second star after Prem Nazir to complete 300 films as the hero in Malayalam. Mammootty reached this feat as he completed his latest film with Renjith titled Kaiyoppu.
* In malayalam movie history, the first star fan club was started in the name of Mammootty in 1989.
* Mammootty also holds the rare distinction of appearing as hero in an astonishing 35 movies released in a single year, 1986, a feat exceeded only by Prem Nazir who acted in 39 movies as hero released during 1979.
* In what is believed to be the first time in the banking history in south India, Mammootty was appointed as brand ambassador by Kerala-based South Indian Bank on 16 October 2006. The Bank chairman said this was taking into consideration the huge following Mammootty enjoys among the NRIs and his image as a clean, pan-Indian actor.
* He is the Patron of the Pain and Palliative Care Society, a charitable organization in Kerala formed with the aim of improving the quality of life among patients with advanced cancer.
* Akshaya, the prestigious Information Technology dissemination project of the Government of Kerala, has Mammootty as the star campaigner. He formally took over as the Goodwill Ambassador of Akshaya on February 26 at a video networked programme which was linked to all the district headquarters of the state. Mammootty will take up the responsibility of spearheading a campaign by appearing in print and visual media advertisements and other publicity materials that will send the message of Akshaya to the grassroots.
* "Mathilukal (The Walls) has been shown in almost 40 international film festivals beginning with Venice. Among my films, it is Mathilukal which has invited the maximum number of internaional honours. The sincere co-operation by Mammootty, the actor has played a major role in the success of the movie" - Adoor Gopalakrishnan.
* There was a rumour prevailing that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) would field him for one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from Kerala during June 26 elections. Later on the news subsided as Mammootty denied any such possibility. However, Mammootty is known to be close to the CPI-M. He is the chairman of Kairali television channel in which the CPI-M has a high stake.
* He was offered to act as Coca-Cola's brand ambassador/Model in Kerala during March 2004. But, pressure from various quarters, it seems, has prompted the Megastar to give up the ambitious offer. Several environmental groups were calling for the soft drink's boycott.
* He recently published a book Kazhchapadu (perspectives), a compilation of articles he had penned for a column in the largest ciruclated Malayalam newspaper Malayala Manorama. M.T.Vasudevan Nair the doyen of Malayalam writers and a personal friend of Mammootty released the book published by Current Books, Trichur to C.V. Sreeraman.
* His remarks during the 2006 IIFA Awards ceremony held at Dubai had gained a lot of media and public attention. He openly criticised the organisers of the IIFA awards for completely ignoring South Indian films. Mammootty suggested that the Bollywood film industry stand up to competition from the South Indian film industry before calling itself international. Take into account that South Indians have won 14 out of 26 National Film Awards over that many years (Mammootty has himself won it thrice, Amitabh Bachchan twice, Shahrukh Khan never!) and that a significant number of Hindi films are remakes of successful South Indian films — Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. And these include all old record-breaking Telugu and Tamil remakes. He boldly made comments like, Indian cinema is not just Bollywood, and Hindi is not the only language. Why should our films be called South Indian cinema instead of being under the banner of Indian films?
